Bertrand Grospellier (ElkY) is one of the most successful tournament players today, both in Poker and StarCraft.

ElkY started his poker career by playing in another relatively unknown poker circuit. The real-time strategy game StarCraft is very popular online; it’s so popular it even spawned its own TV channel in South Korea. Can you believe it? A TV Channel, in fact make that 2, dedicated just to a single computer game! If only poker had its own channel…

Anyway, ElkY paved the way for other gaming professionals to do the transition towards poker in the same way. Hevad Kahn is a very good example of this. The thing is, massively multitabling poker requires a similar skillset than playing computer games. Like amazing mouse dexterity, being able to see perfectly with the corner of your eye, lightning fast reflexes and of course, the ability which might be the most important of all the above: quick thinking.

Elky decimated the opposition in StarCraft, and quickly became one of the most feared opponents. He was one of the top ranked StarCraft players in the world at one time, having finished 2nd at the World Cyber Games in ’01, and also a 4th place finish in the Ongamenet Starleague. In 2002, he also decimated the opposition in WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos, feat best remarked by his third place finish in the televised Ongamenet WarCraft Retail league before he hung up the cleats.

He then turned his attention to poker. A friend actually introduced him to PokerStars, and ElkY instantly realized that he had the raw skillset necessary to play online poker. Acclimatizing did not take him long, and soon his most wonderful journey began.

ElkY made history by being the first ever player to have made the Supernova and Supernova Elite status on PokerStars. What he did was just the true definition of hardcore grindage: he attained 100K player points in just two weeks, and 1,000,000 player points to get the 6 black stars in just under four and a half months. Totally insane!

Interestingly, a testament to this hardcore grindage is that ElkY is also in possession of the Guinness World Record of most Sit&Go’s played in hour, with 62. He played 62 $6.50 SNG’s for a profit of $23,60 and set himself in the record books.

ElkY has been a force of nature on the tourney scene. He has had an innumerable amount of cashes around the globe, but he has also has had many fat cashes. In the 2007 EPT Copenhagen, ElkY finished 2nd and won $399,953 for his efforts. Later during that same year, ElkY did it again by making a World Series of Poker final table, and finished 9th in the $2,500 No Limit Hold’em Event. In the popular PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, ElkY showed the world what he was capable of by beating a field of 1,013 hopefuls to go home with a cool $2,000,000 in prize money.

In the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker, ElkY also demonstrated his superior prowess, cashing in several events to the sum of $400,000, which included a second place finish in the $25,000 Heads Up NLHE event worth $320,000.

In October 2008, he once again took down a major live tourney: this time it was the $15,000 buy-in World Poker Tour event Festa del Lago that took place at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. That score was worth about $1,411,015.

In 2009, ElkY once again did well at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Bahamas event that takes place every January, this time taking down the High Rollers $25,000 buy-in event for $433,500. ElkY then proceeded to take a third place finish at the NBC National Heads Up Championship tournament, cementing his place as one of the best heads up players in the world. And then, in March of 2009, he then took another 3rd place finish, this time in the WPT World Championship held at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, and this score netted him $776,245.

ElkY plays in a ton of tournaments. As one might know, with how tournaments can drag on and demand your time, he does not benefit of having a ton of spare time. That said, ElkY is still an avid gamer, and he hangs around online games from time to time, especially real-time strategy games. ElkY is also planning to move shortly from Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy to metropolitan London (nothing to do with poker winnings being tax free in England, I’m sure ;))

All in all, a great player and one of the fiercest competitors you will ever face. That is the member of Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand Grospellier, aka ElkY.
