Ben Roberts
Professional British poker player Ben Roberts was born with the name Mehvi Javani in Persia. He changed his name to Benjamin Roberts in 1970s because he wanted his kids to have English names. He moved to London as a teenager & was introduced to the ever so consuming world of Poker by his friends. It was a chance encounter as his friends took out a deck while a beach outing and invited him to play. As a player in Europe his focus was on the No- limit & Pot- Limit games offered in the continent.
He has made it to the final table of World Series of Poker & World Speed Poker Open on several occasions including the $3000 Pot-Limit Hold tournament at the 2001 World Series of Poker and the $3000 No-Limit Hold tournament at the 2005 Five Diamond Poker Classic. In 1998 he finished 6th & almost made it to the Final Table of the $ 10000 Big main Event.
He reached his first final table in 2002 at the World Poker Tour (WPT).He finished 5th at the Grand Prix de Paris . He was awarded € 101,980 at this event.. Since, he has finished in the money 7 times at World Series of Poker. He topped that with another 3 money finishes at the World Poker Tour.
In 2005, at the VC cup he made it to the final table. He also competed in the World Speed Poker the same year. He became the 5th entrant in the European Poker Players Hall of Fame in 2005. He appeared at the Late Night Poker in 2002, his only of the career. He finished 3rd at this event, beating players of the stature of Ross Boatmaan, Daniel Negreanu and Malcolm Harwood.
Ben finished 178th at the World Series of Poker No limit Holde’m held in 2008. In the same series he finished 8th in the Pot Limit Hold’em event. He finished 32nd in Paris Open LPS held in 2007. At the Crown Aussie Millions Championships he finished 26th at the event held in January 2006. At the Annual World Series of Poker he finished 44th at the event held in June 2006. He finished 2nd at the event 4 (No limit Hold’em) of the Bellagio Five Diamond World Poker Classic held in Dec 2005. At the VC Poker held in 2005 his 3rd place finish is remembered by his peers very clearly. At the European Championship Main Event (No limit Hold’em) he finished 17th. The event held in 2003 still is remembered by him as a very challenging poker game.
At the 2003 Jack Binion's World Poker Open 4th Year- WPT season 4 he finished 18th. It was a No limit event, one of Ben’s favorite. At the Vienna Spring Festival another No limit Poker game, he finished 3rd.It was held in 2002. Roberts was a professional pool player in his early days and also played table tennis. He was a county Table Tennis Champion in 1978 and English Pool Champion in 1979. But he realized he lacked talent to make it big at snooker. He was much better at Poker & decided to pursue Poker professionally.
He lives in London with his wife and three kids and spends most of his free time with them. He is also fond of Jazz music and likes to read. He plays online for Full Tilt Poker. He is often addressed as Gentleman Ben for his formal attire and well behaved mannerism at the table.
