Andy Bloch Interview Published May 18, 2006
Intro by Eric Sprague:
Andy Bloch is a well known pro in both blackjack and poker. We hope you enjoy the questions and answers below from our live chat with Andy (May 17th at 10pm ET). Please see our Blackjack Section if the 21 questions seem confusing. Our
chat room is open 24/7 so check it out!
09:56:12 pm : Xianti : Greetings, Andy!
09:56:19 pm : Eric : Welcome Andy!
09:56:21 pm : Andy Bloch : Hello!
09:56:37 pm : Xianti : May we wait 5 more minutes to allow more people to show up?
09:56:45 pm : Eric : Everybody please type /motd to view the format for our chat with Andy.
09:57:04 pm : Xianti : FIRST SEGMENT: MODERATOR Q & A (1-on-1). Only the Session Moderator is allowed to ask prepared questions. All others must refrain from any chat during this time. 2. Session Moderator informs everyone that he's done with his questions and welcomes the guest to all members. SECOND SEGMENT: OPEN 1. Questions should be limited to batches of three. Once you see that there is a batch of at least three questions for the guest, refrain from all chat. 2. Guest may choose to answer as many questions
09:57:48 pm : Eric : Thanks for spending some time with us Andy
09:58:06 pm : Eric : While we're waiting for everyone I'll ask a question specific to the Beating Blackjack DVD.
09:58:25 pm : Eric : In 21 the count impacts basic strategy yet this wasn't discussed on the Beating Blackjack dvd outside of splitting tens and taking insurance. When the count is high do you make changes like doubling down on 11 against an ace or doubling down on a 9 against a deuce?
09:59:05 pm : Xianti : Everyone, please enter /motd to see the format and rules. Right now, it's a 1-on-1 between Eric and Andy. Please refrain from chatting.
09:59:29 pm : Andy Bloch : Yes, you can make those types of variations
09:59:41 pm : Andy Bloch : but you don't need to vary your play to be able to profit at blackjack
09:59:51 pm : Eric : Does the MIT team have a chart for those adjustments?
10:00:13 pm : Andy Bloch : and from our experience, beginners cost themselves more from incorrect deviations than they gain
10:00:32 pm : Andy Bloch : Yes, the MIT team did have a chart for deviations
10:00:40 pm : Eric : that's true, counting and playing correct basic strategy is already asking a lot
10:00:45 pm : Eric : Next Question
10:00:59 pm : Eric : Originally I learned the Hi-Opt counting system which is like the Hi-Lo except that Aces and Deuces are Zero. How important is it to keep track of Aces and Deuces?
10:01:06 pm : Andy Bloch : By the way, I just turned on my webcam
10:01:10 pm : Andy Bloch : andybloch.com/webcam
10:01:20 pm : Eric : oh cool, i'll ck it
10:01:31 pm : Andy Bloch : Aces are VERY important for betting decisions
10:01:57 pm : Andy Bloch : if you have a count that doesn't use them, then you should keep a side track of aces
10:02:10 pm : Eric : Cool, good to know.
10:02:11 pm : Andy Bloch : aces are less important for strategy deviations
10:02:18 pm : Eric : Next Question
10:02:29 pm : Eric : Do a lot of the MIT Blackjack members play poker?
10:02:54 pm : Andy Bloch : if you happened to find a single deck game dealt all the way to the bottom, but you weren't allowed to vary your bet, then aces wouldn't be so important to count
10:03:11 pm : Andy Bloch : several of my MIT teammates did take up poker
10:03:23 pm : Eric : interesting, almost everything on the strip is 6 decks so I see the importance of including them.
10:03:29 pm : Andy Bloch : in fact, that's how I met "Mr. M" in the first place
10:03:43 pm : Eric : ah
10:03:48 pm : Eric : Next Question
10:03:50 pm : Eric : What WSOP events do you plan on playing this year?
10:04:01 pm : Andy Bloch : I'm going to play most of the events
10:04:15 pm : Andy Bloch : hopefully I'll make a couple of final tables and have to miss a few
10:04:24 pm : Andy Bloch : I'm most looking forward to the HORSE event
10:04:38 pm : Eric : Next Question from ttanaka (he hasn't yet seen the Beating Blackjack dvd)
10:04:42 pm : Eric : How would the team communicate the count to the big bettor once he joins the table? ie - code words for each count or did a number just get dropped in random conversatoin? If code words were used, can you give us some examples of those?
10:05:10 pm : Andy Bloch : code words usually
10:05:19 pm : Andy Bloch : we had words for the numbers from 1 to 20
10:05:44 pm : Eric : Next Question from ttanaka
10:05:47 pm : Eric : Did you run into any scare tactics from casino's, ie - mafia style intimidation? Which did you fear more - casino security or the IRS?
10:05:51 pm : Andy Bloch : the best words were easy to use in a conversation in multiple connotations
10:06:01 pm : Andy Bloch : lol
10:06:14 pm : Eric : y, I remember you said great is good because it could be sarcastic or legit
10:06:20 pm : Andy Bloch : well, I've been arrested a few times, but the charges if any were dropped
10:06:25 pm : Andy Bloch : I never got beat up
10:06:37 pm : Eric : lol, that's good to know
10:06:50 pm : Andy Bloch : right, you can say "great" after a win or a loss
10:07:10 pm : Eric : We can open it up now to all members, please don't overwhelm Andy with more than 3 questions per the /motd guidelines
10:07:10 pm : Andy Bloch : I was arrested in Monte Carlo, it was a little scary at first
10:07:17 pm : Andy Bloch : but they were just trying to scare us
10:07:36 pm : Andy Bloch : I was worried when they were searching our rental car
10:07:42 pm : Eric : i liked the Monte Carlo in the dvd, police escort :)
10:08:02 pm : Andy Bloch : not that we had anything, but I was wondering why they were searching it, were they going to plant something on us?
10:08:18 pm : Eric : that would have been a nightmare
10:08:19 pm : Andy Bloch : we got a free ride on the grand prix track
10:08:25 pm : andy-akb : questions are now open to all members?
10:08:29 pm : zarry : Andy, What is your view on players and college. Like schooling if a player can make a living playing poker do you see it neccessary to finish school?
10:08:32 pm : Eric : y
10:08:40 pm : Andy Bloch : definitely finish school
10:08:44 pm : Andy Bloch : I'm happy I did
10:08:55 pm : Andy Bloch : who knows what the poker world will be like in a few years
10:09:11 pm : Eric : you went to Harvard Law School too right?
10:09:16 pm : Andy Bloch : plus there are hundreds or thousands of other college students like you who are dreaming of winning the WSOP
10:09:23 pm : Xianti : Yes. Welcome, everyone. It is now Open Q&A. Please ask questions in batches of 3 and let Andy respond.
10:09:33 pm : Andy Bloch : yes, i went to law school after becoming a professional gambler
10:09:55 pm : Xianti : Andy, when you feel you've answered and want the next batch, please let us know by saying "Next." Thank you.
10:10:03 pm : Andy Bloch : next
10:10:07 pm : ttanaka : Andy, ru still playing blackjack, and can you find good blackjack games available on the strip?
10:10:08 pm : andy-akb : After reading your brief bio in the description of the dvd on amazon I see that you have excelled in a lot of different areas, law, engineering, stock market, etc. Do you find any transferable qualities in these areas?
10:10:34 pm : Andy Bloch : I occasionally play blackjack, but I'm too well known to be able to play for a long period of time at any one place
10:10:45 pm : Andy Bloch : Yes, you can still find good games.
10:11:13 pm : Andy Bloch : Especially if you put together a small team, betting a couple of hundred, maybe 2x$500 max
10:11:37 pm : Andy Bloch : You can also play a break-even game for comps
10:12:05 pm : Andy Bloch : if my DVD motivates you just to learn perfect basic strategy it will be worth it
10:13:01 pm : Andy Bloch : andy-akb, I can't say that I have excelled at law (yet) but they all involve logical thinking, and all but law involve math
10:13:32 pm : Andy Bloch : thinking analytically is an important and useful skill
10:13:34 pm : Andy Bloch : next
10:13:54 pm : samsonite2100 : Andy, speaking of the future of poker--what do you think about the current legislation to outlaw online gaming? Do you think it'll happen?
10:13:58 pm : zarry : Dont you guys know its impolite to come late? :)
10:14:39 pm : ttanaka : Andy, are you still running WPTFan.com?
10:14:49 pm : Roco415 : what is the single best way to improve in poker in your opinion besides the obvious things like hand selection etc. ...(more complex things)
10:14:52 pm : Andy Bloch : samsonite, I don't think that there will be new federal legislation to outlaw gambling on the internet, at least not poker
10:15:32 pm : Andy Bloch : Howard Lederer, Chris Ferguson, and Greg Raymer went to Washington to lobby and I think they were successful with the senators and reps that they talked with
10:16:07 pm : Xianti : Excellent.
10:16:13 pm : Andy Bloch : I still "run" wptfan.com, but that doesn't mean too much
10:16:17 pm : Andy Bloch : it mostly runs itself
10:16:27 pm : samsonite2100 : yeah, good to know--thanks
10:16:39 pm : Andy Bloch : I think I will need to change the name, maybe to WSOPfan.com, since I'm not a WPT fan curretntly!
10:16:48 pm : ttanaka : lol
10:16:49 pm : Andy Bloch : next
10:17:03 pm : Xianti : haha
10:17:15 pm : zarry : Do you think poker is a socially acceptable way to make a living?
10:17:33 pm : Andy Bloch : poker has finally become socially acceptable
10:17:34 pm : andy-akb : haha, thats quite the face on the webcam
10:17:41 pm : Andy Bloch : although there are still some people that don't think so
10:17:54 pm : Andy Bloch : I'm practicing my poker face
10:18:00 pm : Xianti : I was laughing at that face, too. Thanks for the webcam link, Andy
10:18:01 pm : andy-akb : haha
10:18:08 pm : Muxy : webcam huh?
10:18:16 pm : Andy Bloch : andybloch.com/webcam
10:18:18 pm : andy-akb : http://andybloch.com/webcam/
10:18:22 pm : Xianti : for those of you who showed up late, Andy is on his webcam now
10:18:23 pm : Andy Bloch : I just started doing it
10:18:28 pm : elanto : what has been your biggest negative streak in poker?
10:18:35 pm : Andy Bloch : usually just when I'm playing on Full Tilt Poker
10:18:51 pm : Andy Bloch : well, I went the whole WSOP in 2004 without cashing
10:19:24 pm : Andy Bloch : and my biggest losing streak last year was in the WSOP, although I followed it up with a $167k win the next week at the UPC
10:19:54 pm : Andy Bloch : I think playing too much, every day, and spending so much time at the Rio negatively affected my game
10:19:55 pm : Eric : You're on the Griffin list but that's for blackjack only right? In other words you've never had any trouble sitting in a casino poker room have you?
10:20:03 pm : zarry : What was the biggest hand of your life...
10:20:17 pm : elanto : nice. What advice do you have for new players who are just starting to get series about?
10:20:30 pm : Andy Bloch : Well, Griffin Investigations is a private detective agency
10:20:42 pm : zarry : and by biggest i mean most influential/... not just money wise
10:20:52 pm : Andy Bloch : It's up to individual casinos to decide what they do with that information
10:21:06 pm : elanto : about pker i meant
10:21:07 pm : elanto : lol
10:21:26 pm : Andy Bloch : I know some blackjack players who are on the list who got barred from the Rio and they weren't allowed back to play the WSOP
10:21:41 pm : Andy Bloch : but generally places will be happy if I play poker there
10:22:12 pm : elanto : What advice do you have for new players who are just starting to <br>get series about poker?
10:22:13 pm : Andy Bloch : I've been told many times I'm welcome to play poker, but don't go near the blackjack tables or that might change
10:22:23 pm : Eric : rofl
10:22:29 pm : Xianti : hahaha
10:22:49 pm : Andy Bloch : Well, I think my biggest hand was the hand I busted on the first time I played the WSOP $10k, in 1997
10:23:17 pm : Andy Bloch : search for "Andy Bloch Project" and you can read about that hand and every other hand I was dealt at that tournament
10:23:44 pm : Andy Bloch : My advice to new players, treat poker like a serious hobby
10:23:55 pm : Andy Bloch : set aside some money that you can afford to lose
10:24:06 pm : Andy Bloch : study the game
10:24:14 pm : Andy Bloch : start at low limits and work your way up
10:24:44 pm : Andy Bloch : like any hobby, poker will probably cost you some money at first
10:24:50 pm : Xianti : Read FTR and then play at FullTilt... right, Andy?
10:25:01 pm : Andy Bloch : but don't play so high that the losses will hurt
10:25:10 pm : Andy Bloch : right ;)
10:25:23 pm : Andy Bloch : next
10:25:56 pm : elanto : How often do you play at Full Tilt Poker, and what stakes do you play?
10:25:57 pm : Xianti : Andy, do you remember me?
10:26:09 pm : Xianti : http://www.flopturnriver.com/photos/albums/userpics/10001/Xianti-Andy-Bloch-WSOP-2005.jpg
10:26:11 pm : Xianti : lol
10:26:17 pm : ttanaka : hahaha
10:26:22 pm : Xianti : hahaha
10:26:28 pm : Eric : that's a cool picture :)
10:26:49 pm : Andy Bloch : nice picture
10:27:09 pm : Xianti : Thanks for taking the picture with me at last year's WSOP.
10:27:26 pm : Andy Bloch : no problem
10:27:44 pm : elanto : xianti did you play last year??
10:27:54 pm : Andy Bloch : don't miss the Full Tilt suite at the wsop this year
10:27:54 pm : elanto : at the WSOP?
10:28:12 pm : Xianti : I played some cash games. But let's keep the questions directed to Andy.
10:28:18 pm : zarry : This may be a little off topic... Have you ever tried vault, the soda? If so how do you like the taste? Is it too carbonated?
10:28:31 pm : Xianti : What and where is the Full Tilt suite?
10:28:32 pm : Andy Bloch : nope, never tried it
10:28:45 pm : Andy Bloch : I've been drinking a lot of coke zero
10:28:53 pm : Muxy : Andy Bloch what are your views on canadians, i get made fun of a lot. We are good people right?
10:28:54 pm : Andy Bloch : speaking of which, I think i'll go get one
10:28:59 pm : zarry : Ahh you should be carefull aspertane...
10:29:00 pm : andy-akb : What other poker variations do you play other than nl holdem?
10:29:01 pm : Xianti : Andy, you're a great sport.
10:29:02 pm : andy-akb : haha
10:29:09 pm : Andy Bloch : canadians are american too
10:29:18 pm : Andy Bloch : as are mexicans
10:29:19 pm : Muxy : EH?
10:29:49 pm : Andy Bloch : if you are talking about continents
10:30:17 pm : elanto : im an american to then!!!!!
10:30:33 pm : elanto : <---Colombian
10:30:40 pm : Andy Bloch : yup
10:30:46 pm : Andy Bloch : central and south america count too
10:31:08 pm : elanto : How often do you play at Full Tilt Poker, and what stakes do you play?
10:31:14 pm : Muxy : Andy Bloch do you think pot-odds are less important in touranment poker?
10:31:30 pm : Andy Bloch : I play 10 hours a week or more
10:31:36 pm : Andy Bloch : on average
10:31:40 pm : Andy Bloch : and I play everything
10:31:47 pm : Andy Bloch : from play money to the "big game"
10:32:12 pm : Andy Bloch : I like to play low limit ring games and SNGs to give everyone a chance to play with a pro
10:32:37 pm : Andy Bloch : Pot odds are always important
10:32:55 pm : Andy Bloch : near the end of a tournament, you have to figure survival into the pot odds equatino
10:33:11 pm : Xianti : Andy, you mentioned that you're most looking forward to the HORSE event at the WSOP this year. Can you tell us what appeals to you about it? And do you foresee more online poker rooms adding HORSE to their games (such as Full Tilt has been doing)?
10:33:52 pm : Muxy : Andy Bloch what do you think about the 50k horse tourament being a NLHE final table. Doesn't that seem to take the edge out of the "horse" structure
10:33:59 pm : Andy Bloch : One thing I do, I assign my last chip a value, that helps figure out whether I have pot odds given the value of survival
10:34:25 pm : Andy Bloch : I like to play different games
10:34:33 pm : Muxy : How do you assign that value?
10:34:37 pm : Andy Bloch : I get bored with all hold'em, all the time
10:35:06 pm : Andy Bloch : If we're on or near the bubble, the value is about the value of the last place prize money
10:35:43 pm : Andy Bloch : I don't forsee too many other sites adding HORSE
10:36:10 pm : Andy Bloch : most likely their software design doesn't make it too easy
10:36:49 pm : Andy Bloch : Even at Full Tilt, I doubt you'll see a HORSE ring game for a while
10:37:14 pm : Andy Bloch : most sites don't have razz, and most probably don't have the ability to mix different games in a tournament
10:37:31 pm : Xianti : How involved were you and the other pros at Full Tilt in developing the interface and structure of the site, games and software?
10:37:47 pm : Andy Bloch : If it weren't for TV, the HORSE final table should stay HORSE.
10:38:01 pm : Andy Bloch : ESPN hsan't really figured out how to televise anything but hold'em
10:38:26 pm : Andy Bloch : We provided a lot of feedback and direction
10:38:39 pm : Andy Bloch : also, many of the programmers were poker players
10:38:59 pm : Andy Bloch : including perry friedman, who, surprisingly enough, won a bracelet in Omaha Hi Lo
10:39:25 pm : Andy Bloch : that's why many thins are done right on Full Tilt that other sites got wrong
10:39:30 pm : Andy Bloch : like the button when heads up
10:39:53 pm : Andy Bloch : next
10:41:09 pm : Xianti : Andy, do you wish to share any more info or links to promote your blackjack book?
10:41:19 pm : Andy Bloch : DVD
10:41:25 pm : Xianti : DVD.. yes.
10:41:28 pm : Eric : yes, i highly recommend the Beating Blackjack dvd
10:41:56 pm : Andy Bloch : I am also doing a 1-day seminar with Phil Gordon
10:42:08 pm : Muxy : Andy Bloch what are your views on the David Williams fiasco. Has it been cycling vegas for awhile now and it just hit mainstream?
10:42:14 pm : Xianti : Tell us more about the seminar, please.
10:42:14 pm : Andy Bloch : he's giving a poker lesson in the morning, I'm giving a blackjack lesson in the afternoon
10:42:29 pm : Eric : that's a nice combo
10:42:32 pm : Roco415 : what happened with williams muxy?
10:42:47 pm : Andy Bloch : We're calling it "Las Vegas Academy"
10:43:26 pm : Andy Bloch : It's going to be June 24th in Las Vegas
10:43:34 pm : Andy Bloch : https://www.clientcart.com/secure/_Las%20Vegas%20Academy.html
10:43:59 pm : Andy Bloch : $199 early bird special
10:44:00 pm : Eric : cool, ttanka, xianti and i will be out for the $1500 nl holdem on june 27
10:44:21 pm : Andy Bloch : come a couple of days early
10:44:39 pm : Xianti : Andy, tell us more about the Full Tilt Suite at the WSOP. Perhaps we'll see you there.
10:44:39 pm : ttanaka : I'll be there then, I'll check it out.
10:44:44 pm : Eric : we'll have to do that :)
10:45:44 pm : Andy Bloch : Well, if you were at the suite last year or read about it, it will be much better this year
10:46:02 pm : Andy Bloch : It will be in the same location, I believe, but it will be bigger and better
10:46:13 pm : Andy Bloch : I can't give the details yet
10:46:34 pm : Andy Bloch : it's going to be right opposite the entrance to the tournament area
10:46:37 pm : Xianti : Oooh... sounds swank.
10:46:55 pm : Andy Bloch : and players and spectators alike are invited to come in
10:47:05 pm : Eric : nice
10:47:07 pm : Andy Bloch : for a snack or a drink or to meet some pros
10:47:21 pm : Xianti : that's fantastic!
10:47:21 pm : Andy Bloch : last year we gave out lots of different items
10:47:40 pm : Andy Bloch : shirts, hats, mousepads, posters, autographed pictures
10:47:47 pm : Andy Bloch : drawings for DVDs and iPods
10:47:54 pm : ttanaka : Awesome! Andy, FTR is one of the top Full Tilt affiliates, so do we get a free martini in there?
10:47:55 pm : Muxy : Thanks for answering my questions Mr. Bloch, and good luck
10:48:10 pm : Xianti : roffle.. martini with Andy would be swank
10:48:17 pm : ttanaka : lol, ohgodyeah
10:48:20 pm : Eric : oh god yeah
10:48:24 pm : trACE : lol @ martini
10:48:27 pm : Andy Bloch : martini sounds good
10:48:29 pm : trACE : ur horrible tyson
10:48:35 pm : ttanaka : hehehe
10:48:35 pm : Muxy : LOL @ trACE
10:48:38 pm : Muxy : gg cya
10:49:25 pm : ttanaka : Do we have any more questions for Andy?
10:49:37 pm : Andy Bloch : I got to get a sponsorship deal with coke for my webcam
10:49:49 pm : Eric : lol
10:50:05 pm : ttanaka : lol
10:50:11 pm : ttanaka : sponsorships are fun
10:50:23 pm : Xianti : You should. I've bookmarked your webcam page. That's fun.
10:50:29 pm : Eric : Andy, We appreciate you taking the time to talk to us. I was really impressed with the Beating Blackjack dvd.
10:50:35 pm : elanto : andy whats up with the david williams fiasco?
10:50:37 pm : Roco415 : what is number 1 thing to improve your game besides obvious things like hand selection...etc, and excluding things you said earlier, like any technical advice that is more complex than most other stuff?
10:50:42 pm : Xianti : Andy, thank you so much for spending time with us.
10:50:47 pm : Eric : Thanks for going past the 15 minutes we discussed with Alison ;)
10:50:53 pm : Andy Bloch : Well, the David Williams story is old news
10:51:08 pm : Andy Bloch : I'd heard about it right after he finished 2nd in the WSOP
10:51:20 pm : Andy Bloch : I was only supposed to be here for 15 minutes?
10:51:21 pm : Andy Bloch : lol
10:51:32 pm : Andy Bloch : I want to get paid extra!
10:51:41 pm : Eric : lol, this is our first celebrity chat, now we know 15 minutes is way too short
10:51:43 pm : elanto : i havent heard about it :( I never hear gossip lol could someone pls explain
10:51:44 pm : ttanaka : Andy, thank you for your time! Andy Bloch Blackjack and Poker Camp
After watching the Beating Blackjack DVD, I know that Andy Bloch is a great teacher. There is an opportunity for people to learn from Andy in person at the Las Vegas Academy. Here is what expertinsight.com says about it:
Poker Camps are the newest way to learn from the pros – but many are costly. The Expert Insight Las Vegas Academy offers a one day seminar, featuring Phil Gordon and Andy Bloch, both world-class card playing experts, for a fraction of most poker camps.
Gordon, best known as the co-host and expert analyst on Bravo’s hit television series “Celebrity Poker Showdown,” and Bloch, managing member of the infamous M.I.T Blackjack Team, featured in Ben Mezrich’s Bringing Down the House will reveal the secrets to playing poker AND blackjack like an expert. Gordon the featured expert in EI’s instructional DVD “Final Table Poker,” will share his expertise on all aspects of playing poker: pot odds, position, tells, domination, and bluffing. Bloch, the featured expert in EI’s instructional DVD “Beating Blackjack,” will elaborate on perfect basic strategy, card counting, optimal betting, team play and much more.
Las Vegas Academy promises eight hours of world class instruction that will make anyone a significantly better player for only $299. Following the seminars Bloch and Gordon will hold a joint Q & A to answer any and all questions regarding gambling and the Vegas lifestyle. This is a rare opportunity, with an even more appealing price. On Saturday June 24th, 8:30 AM, at the Village Square 18 theatres Gordon and Bloch will teach the ins and outs of gambling and reinvent the Vegas experience.
