Unlike most of the professional dream stories you hear, Allen Cunningham admits that he started out as a losing player. But unlike losing players, Cunningham didn’t quit. Only a short time later, in his early 20's, Cunningham was winning in high stakes cash games and cashing in tournament after tournament.

Originally, Cunningham enrolled at UCLA and planned on having a career in engineering. However, while he was happily studying at school, Allen found time to go to tghe local casinos to play poker. Allen was so excited with poker he drove all the way to the Indian Casino’s where he could play as just an eighteen year old. Because of how fun and profitable Cunningham found the game of poker, he decided to leave school and become a professional poker player. Over eight million dollars later, this is a move that Allen Cunningham definitely does not regret.

In 1999, Cunningham and arguably the current best players in the world, Phil Ivey, John Juanda, Daniel Negreanu, and Layne Flack formed what is referred to as the original “Crew.” They all began their tournament careers at the same time, and would spend much of their time talking to each other about strategies and replaying hands they had that day.

Don’t recognize Allen Cunningham? You should. Cunningham’s accomplishments are so many it’s hard to keep track. Since 1996, he’s had over 100 live tournament cashes, as well as many more online. He has 4 WSOP bracelets, showing his master over not just No Limit Hold’em, but all forms of poker with wins in Seven Card Stud and Deuce to Seven Lowball. His great showing at the WSOP in 2005 nabbed him the ESPN/Toyota Player of The Year. In 2006, he barely missed out in repeating the title.

Sometimes called “Clever Piggy,” Cunningham is most recognized for his final table appearance in the 2006 WSOP main event, where he went toe to toe with eventual winner Jaime Gold. Cunningham proclaimed in an interview with Jay Greenspan,
“This is the most fun and excitement I’ve had in a tournament... it’s been really exciting getting this deep in a big tournament.”

Cunningham got 4th for over 3.5 million dollars, easily his biggest cash ever. For those watching, it was easy to see Cunningham’s mastery over the game and how well he could read his opponents.

Always quiet and controlled, Cunningham’s poker game is a reflection of who he is as a person. Cunningham is a threat to win in whatever poker game is being played at any time. He is a slow, deliberate player who considers all his options, most of the time choosing the correct one. While he is shy, he’s never afraid to talk to his fans in his spare time. Late at night, you can often see Cunningham at the high stakes games of Omaha and No Limit Hold’em.

Cunningham is not known as talkative or as self promoting as other players, but Earl Burton of Poker News thinks that Cunningham is the best.
“Allen Cunningham may very well be the best of the ‘New Generation’ of poker. He continues to demonstrate on the tables that he will be around the game for some time to come and, through his dedication to improvement of his game and amazing analytical skills, could potentially end up being spoken about as one of the legends of the game when he eventually concludes his career.”
